See, my mum does the same thing. I-- more and more we argue about eh, the Scottish language 'cause I call her a-- a like, a bloody heathen because I-- since that I don't speak like a broad Scot, I'm automatically English and I-- I just sort of embraced that and sort of went "you don't speak the King's English, you're a bloody heathen." And she does words like em, she's terrified of spiders so she'll run up stairs and goes, "[name], there's a spider."
Interviewer:
Like a hydra or something.
Derek:
Aye, something like that. Then I go "it's a spider you bloody heathen. Let me go get it."
Bradley:
It'll have one leg and--
Derek:
Aye, and she'll-- she'll just, she'll say like, instead of lunch, she'll say dinner, instead of tea-- em, dinner, she'll call it tea and I'll, just to wind her up, I'll just go "you mean lunch?" "[name] no, it's dinner." "Lunch." "Dinner." "Lunch."
Bradley:
That's something I dislike.
Interviewer:
That-- Yeah, aye, dinner is tea. Dinner is your evening meal, like, that confuses me so much when someone's like "I'm just eating my dinner" and I'm like
Bradley:
Eh?
Interviewer:
"It's two o'clock, what are you doing?"
Older speakers
Catriona:
Aye well I wanted something
Interviewer:
More--
Catriona:
ken, like, kind of beigy-- no too light
Interviewer:
Mhm.
Catriona:
you ken, with dirty feet and that. Then when they came to-- aye it was doon a-- a week before this was doon. And when they come to put it doon I'm said "that's nae the yin I ordered." Ken, it just-- it was.
Interviewer:
Okay.
Catriona:
But just to say, ken, I says-- I says "God, is that it?" kind of thing, you ken? And-- eh but anyway, it was. And then, well, I kenned the two fellas that laid it on everything, like, you ken, and yin of them says-- he didnae ask what age I was but he says "have you somebody comes in to help you with your work yince a week?" I says "you trying to be funny?" "No, I thought you'd have somebody in to help with your work." "No, God" I says "what would I dae, stand and watch them?"
Interviewer:
Yeah like, fair enough you need to take a-- bit of a slower pace but like, you know, you can just do a little bit everyday and like--
Catriona:
Aye well see that's how I didnae go daft emptying my boxes or anything
Interviewer:
Mhm.
Catriona:
ken what I mean? I mean, that wee bit through there was full, ken, of boxes that I couldnae fit in
Interviewer:
Yeah.
Catriona:
but I just, ken. And I didnae do one thing at night for I don't like in here at night with the--
Interviewer:
That's fair.
Catriona:
With the bare windaes but
Interviewer:
'Cause there might be-- yeah.
Catriona:
I went in yesterday to see if there was any word of of them but she says "I'll hint the-morrow." She says "I'll tell them you don't like the big windows when it's dark."
