I was gonna say, I can't imagine Inverness would be that good. Like, is stuff even open til three in Inverness?
Morven:
Probably not.
Interviewer:
Subway, that's open til four.
Morven:
And so's McDonalds.
Greg:
Em, no. I mind we were in Edinburgh, we were in, like, likes of the Boozy Cow til your dad got thrown out.
Morven:
Oh yeah.
Interviewer:
Was that a pop-up bar
Greg:
It's like-- You
Interviewer:
or was it a real bar?
Greg:
you have to go down and it's, like, a metal floor and it's just like a cocktail bar but there's, like, a dance floor bitie but-- It's not that big, if you know what I mean
Interviewer:
Mhm, yes.
Greg:
but there's tables and chairs there.
Interviewer:
And your dad got chucked out?
Morven:
Yeah, because he played his bagpipes, not because he's a rebel.
Greg:
D'you know [name]?
Interviewer:
Yes.
Greg:
Her dad. They got kicked out.
Interviewer:
Oh dear.
Older speakers
Marion:
And she would ask what we were wanting for Christmas and one year I asked for a pair of shoes and they came, they were big. They were-- they were for outdoors, they weren't for going to parties.
Interviewer:
Yeah.
Marion:
And I went to um, eh, the school party and in those days everybody was in the-- from the sixth year right down to Primary One,
Interviewer:
Yeah.
Marion:
the party was all-- because it was the wartime.
Interviewer:
Mhm.
Marion:
And then there was this chap came to dance with me. It was very nice of him, I was 14 and he was a-- a sixth year and we were dancing round my two heavy shoes
Angus:
Big.
Marion:
and I-- and then he learnt me to do "and one two three, one two three, one two" you know, he learnt me how to do the old-fashioned waltz. But I was apologising with my clumsy shoes.
Interviewer:
That's what I'm like all the time without clumsy shoes on.
Marion:
I thought-- I thought I was gonna get a pair of dainty shoe but then when I grew up and was working for myself I used to have heels like that.
Interviewer:
Yeah.
Marion:
And [name] had a-- a man that was working with-- he was actually a friend of my brother's and he came across the floor to dance with me and he was a small man, [name]
Interviewer:
[name], aye.
Marion:
and he said to me-- And I was much taller than him. "What have you got on your feet?" "Red shoes with heels." "Oh" he said. "They should be on the mantelpiece as ornaments."
Angus:
Aye.
Marion:
Because it was between being taller and-- and the high-heeled shoes.
