Interviewer: Hold on, how long ago was it that you left school now?
Seamus: Two year.
Interviewer: Has it been two years now?
Dean: Same here, yeah.
Interviewer: Mhm.
Dean: Well I gied south to Plockton for a year but it was still at school, although I did no school. I was meant to take highers and I just didn't do that.
Interviewer: Yeah, how was that? What did you even do there?
Dean: Well it was just basically--
Seamus: Drank.
Dean: Yeah but they were so mothered, you were-- they tried to mother you, like, keep you-- and you'd be, em, you'd to sign into a little book every time you gied outside the hostel, so. I did that and all that, but. To stop you getting out of your room you had to be back in the hostel for 10 o'clock at night, which is fair enough but at the weekends, if it was a good night or whatever--
Interviewer: Yeah.
Dean: Well there was two bolts on the window and I had a toolbox with me in the car, but I thought "oh I'll be clever" I felt it and thought "that'll be a 13 mil-- that'll be 13 mils, I'll take a 13 mil spanner" so it wasn't obvious, but they were quite clever and they put a 17 mil bolt on the-- on the outside, so-- so I got a 17 mil spanner and I took-- took this bar off the window and that was me away. So I got out whenever I wanted. What else? Och, it was good, music was fine but it just sickened you off a bit. You had to do three hours every day and then when you had lessons it was five hours, which was pretty intense.
Seamus: Just stamina.
Dean: Yeah. But you couldn't do what you wanted, you had to do, like, you had to note down everything you did in your practice
Seamus: Och, I ken.
Dean: and you had to record it sometimes to make sure that you were practising what you were meant to practise. And if you didn't like it, it was boring. But no, it was good overall, it was good. It was good doing the performances, we did some good concerts and stuff.
